TMJ – TMD

What is TMJ/TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull, allowing you to open and close your mouth, chew, and speak. TMJ disorders, also known as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), refer to a group of conditions that affect the TMJ and the surrounding muscles and tissues. Common symptoms of TMJ/TMD may include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Difficulty or discomfort when chewing or biting
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint
  • Limited range of motion or locking of the jaw
  • Headaches or earaches
  • Facial pain or fatigue

TMJ/TMD Treatment Options

Our experienced dental team offers a variety of treatment options to address TMJ/TMD and alleviate associated symptoms. Treatment may include:

  1. Lifestyle Modifications: Simple lifestyle changes such as avoiding hard or chewy foods, practicing relaxation techniques, and improving posture can help reduce TMJ-related symptoms.
  2. Custom Mouthguards: Custom-fitted oral appliances, such as night guards or splints, can help alleviate TMJ-related pain and discomfort by preventing teeth grinding (bruxism) and reducing jaw muscle tension.
  3. Medications: Over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, or corticosteroids, may be recommended to relieve pain and inflammation associated with TMJ/TMD.
  4. Physical Therapy: Therapeutic exercises, massage, and manual manipulation techniques can help improve jaw function, strengthen muscles, and reduce tension in the temporomandibular joint.
  5. Dental Procedures: In some cases, dental treatments such as occlusal adjustments, orthodontic treatment, or restorative procedures may be recommended to correct bite misalignment or dental issues contributing to TMJ/TMD symptoms.
